Knowledge is Your Key to Health

"Knowledge is power." A simple phrase you've probably seen posted up on a wall in some school you went to. As you probably examined the brightly colored laminated poster you just regarded it as some ultimate truth that is obvious to everyone, but in those moments what you didn't realize is the fact that these words could hold the key to unlocking your own greatest personal power, YOUR HEALTH. Health is not only comprised of physical wellness or freedom of disease it is ultimately categorized by your whole self not only feeling well but being centered and balanced. Being centered and balance in the soul and spirit will not only unleash wellness with in the body but create peace within the mind. But many times in our lives it takes the will to overcome great obstacles that brings us this truth and many physical and mental blockages are created to impede upon the power of the spirit and soul. Physical blockages could be anything from a bad diet to a horrible car accident that gives you a "permanent" disability. While mental blockages could come from anything like an abusive childhood to stress on the job. All these things compromise our holistic health in ways, that in this society, we are not taught to understand. The ignorance of this misunderstanding creates more imbalance and further detriments your long term ability to heal. So to counter act these situations we must arm ourselves with power to combat them. The power i am speaking of is of course not only knowledge but knowledge of your self and the world around and connected to you.
If you do not already know i am highly in favor of alternative or holistic medicine. Through not only study but personal experience i have come to realized that holistic medicine not only heals the body but it helps to heal the mind, spirit, and soul as well. Through practices like yoga you find simultaneous stimulation and healing of not only the body but the mind. Through understanding herbal therapy you begin to understand how mother nature has always provided you with medicinal aid to help you heal, and with understanding of the practice of acupuncture we are reminded only further that the energy that flows through the universe is also constant with in you. I could go on forever delving into aspects of energy medicine or natural treatments but i would only be saying the same thing over and over again, that these practices not only heal but equip you with the chance to further become in-tune with yourself. As they all encompass an education of the patient not only looking at you as some problem to be solved but as a student of your own health. Giving the knowledge and information to not only heal but truly live your life being at peace with yourself. This is the greatest power that one could be granted cease it and take back your life.
If you or anyone you know around you could benefit from any of the practices i mentioned or any alternative medicine i encourage you to open your mind to the possibilities. It is not a road for the weak. It does require resolve and determination as these practices are not always readily available, but with research, information, and not being afraid to reach out you can not only receive healing but affirm the greatest gift of all growth.

And if you have been trying to keep an eye on your figure lately this might have you in a bit of a tizzy. But never fear, here are 7 healthy alternative strategies you can deploy against this calories filled season.

  1. Everything in Moderation: We have all heard this saying time and time again but when it comes to your holiday temptations it is key. If you feel like you are depriving yourself of the foods you love you will be more likely to binge later on during the holiday season. Give yourself a treat but be mindful of how much of the treat you are consuming.
  2. Portion Control: This goes hand and hand with tip #1. Eat small portions of the food that you want to indulge in. Eat these small portions through out the day instead of binging all at once.
  3. Load up your plate with VEGGIES! As it is most people do not eat enough fresh vegetables as it is. Do not make this mistakes when you are making your rounds this holiday season. It will give you the satisfaction of being full with out the guilt of high calorie and or fat intake!
  4. Be Proactive: If you know you are going to events where there will be a lot of temptations, make sure that you have been making healthy decisions before hand be strict on your diet in the weeks before the events that way you wont be so worried about indulging at these events.
  5. Bring Your Own Dish: This is key for people who have more strict dietary habits like myself. Bring your own healthy alternatives to the decedent dishes that will be served at the event. This is also a great way to share your nutritious and delicious lifestyle with others around you while making sure there is something healthy for you to eat!
  6. Watch Your Alcohol Intake: Like i said everything in moderation and all though we may enjoy the buzz of a nice cocktail, they are FILLED with empty calories and will spike your calorie intake if you are not careful.
  7. Stay Active: These are the most important times to get into or keep on your work out regimen. Especially before you indulge in these foods. Working out before you eat will help you to burn off the food by raising your metabolism.

Introduction

I've made a vow to myself, that if i can find healthy alternatives to all my favorite junk foods, then i would have no sound excuse against becoming a vegetarian (preserving my health.) And let me tell you i have made one of the most crucial discoveries, not only can the healthy alternatives be delicious and nutritious but a lot of the times they can be easier to prepare than their decadent counter parts. So there it is i no longer have any valid reason to not take care of myself (not that there ever is.)
So in light of this recent discovery and my relatively new decision to take charge of my health i've decided to create this blog. A place where i can share not only helpful hints and tips but my own personal triumphs and struggles with reclaiming my health and ultimately my life. So for the time being i have decided to create a short but sweet post that sums up the purpose and direction of the blog. Which is to help everyone from transitioning, to already experienced veterinarians understand that nutritious food can ultimately be delicious food!
As well as some newly discovered naturally delicious recipes.....
  • Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Vegan Oatmeal and Raisin Cookies
  • Pink Vegan Raw Ice Cream
  • Vegan Brownies
I hope you enjoy!
